Listening to: From the Choirgirl Hotel. Not for long, though... it's not really matching my mood quite like I was expecting it too.

Currently Reading: Just barely started Jonathan Lethem's Gun, With Occasional Music. Kind of saving it for the train, as well as a stack of others (both fiction and non). Also, I recently read Laurie Notaro's I Love Everybody (and Other Atrocious Lies): True Tales of a Loudmouth Girl (again) in like two days, and peed myself laughing. Highly recommended. I also devoured The Broke Diaries by Angela Nissel in, like, a mere few days. Laughed until I peed. Also highly recommended.

Wishing: income. Lots of it. Other than that, life's pretty good.

Advice for Freshmen

I'm so tired.

But feeling so wonderful.

I've started moving into my new room, and I have found myself, from time to time, just stopping. And looking around the room. Was it the Novena to Saint Jude? Was it the connections? Was it going to happen no matter what? Whatever way, I'm one lucky little bastard. I'm just so happy to be there. I have this whole new sypmathy for the displaced, the homeless, political refugees... I know it sounds insane, but I'm so much more thankful for my new living space. *Sigh*

I have the furniture set up quite to my liking. If you've seen an SU dorm room, you'll understand how I've set up my room when I explain it thusly:

My room is such that when you walk in, the door opens to the left, and the sink is on the right. I have one wardrobe behind the door, the other one is next to it, against the left wall on the other side of the pillar. My bed is against the window in the left corner of the room, directly beneath the cork board. My desk faces the window in the far right corner of the room. The couch will go on the right wall, opposite the second wardrobe. The second desk is in the close right corner, near the sink. My fridge will go on top of that, the television will go on top of the fridge. A wheeled storage drawer set will go between the wardrobes, another will go between my bed and desk, another will go next to the desk with the fridge on it, and another will go to storage. I'll try to post pictures as soon as possible.

I've ordered clothes that will fit me. I ordered from J. Spew, Old Navy, and LL Bean. I also ordered some bedding from LL Bean. I ordered some books from Amazon.com, I ordered a scanner from Amazon.com (should be arriving soon-- stay tuned for some drawings and doodles)!! I ordered a hot pot from Amazon.com, as well, and then realized that it would take 3-5 weeks to get here, so I ordered a comparable unit from Target.com. Sad, I know, but I'm in college, so bear with me.

I've been trying to think of some advice for upcoming freshman, in case any are reading. Here's what I have come up with:

* Don't go to events simply because they offer free food. I didn't, and I did just fine. Unless you're starving, and have no money or food plan points. But really-- they think they can lure you to these events with free food, and if the event requires that you be lured to it, it is probably lame. Don't let them manipulate you like this.

* The "freshman 15" is very real. Mine was more like a "freshman 100." Start saving up for plastic surgery now. I have.

* Get into therapy, whether you're psychologically stable or not. College will make you nutty sometimes, and if you don't have a psychiatric professional, you may loose friends. Thankfully, many of my friends have learned this without having to loose too many friends yet.

* Write to family often. If you write to them, they will write to you, and everyone looks up to the person who gets lots of mail from home. Except for the guy who sorts the mail, of course, but you'll get to know him soon enough, too.

* Don't think you need to do everything. This was my fresman year mistake. Leave as much free time open as possible, because you will have friends outside of your activities, but if you have too many activities you won't have any time to spend with your regular friends. This makes you look like an ass, and you will wish you hadn't.

* Focus on your studies. One of the worst feelings in the world is, "I've never failed a class before, I hope I pass this bitch."

* Have fun, but not too much. I suggest a good prank. Some friends and I pulled one last year, (I won't go into much detail, but it *does* have to do with one dozen college students, gallons and gallons of detergent, and an on-campus fountain...) and it was the most fun I had last year.

* Try having a plant. Don't over-water. Over-watering will not only kill your plant, but create smelly mold and possibly aphids, which sucks. Be really careful. I suggest ferns, vines, or succulents (cacti, et cetera). And remember that if you can't keep a plant alive, you can't keep a fish alive, so don't even bother. Seamonkeys, perhaps, but not fish. And ant farms just make people nervous and cause problems, so try to stay away from that, too.

* Drinking is inevitable, but know your limits. Going to the hospital for alcohol poisoning limits your trustworthiness, and people pity you, which you don't want. Puking on three different floors in your dorm building isn't particularly fun either, and saying and doing things you don't remember later is just scary. Don't get so drunk that you clumbsily injure yourself, either. I got a nastily painful thumb-smashing in a restroom stall door that December night, and another friend hit her head pretty hard on a bedpost, arousing the suspicion of security officers. Just don't do it.

Okay. I'm exhausted now. I really really have to go to bed. Here's the smile for the day, though:
